Macau Insurance underwriting recovery set after loss-making lines cut

The insurer’s operating results have been consistently positive over the past 20 years.

Macau Insurance Company Limited (MIC) is expected to improve its underwriting result in 2026, AM Best said.

The insurer has tightened the underwriting discipline and discontinued some of its loss-making businesses, the credit rating agency said in a report on 27 August.

The insurer maintained its balance sheet at its strongest level at year-end 2025, it added.

The insurer’s operating results have been consistently positive over the past 20 years, supported by its investment results, albeit it did report a slight underwriting loss, AM Best said.

MIC also continued to achieve favourable investment gains owing to the changes in fair value of its equity investments.

“MIC expects to maintain its high proportion of equity investments in the near future, which may introduce moderate volatility to its operating performance,” AM Best wrote.

Going forward, MIC said that it aims to grow in the Greater Bay Area whilst embracing digitalisation to enhance its service level, data accuracy and process efficiency to support its future business expansion, AM Best said.
