New Zealand August weather insurance losses breach more than $27m

Initial data revealed 3,165 claims filed.

New Zealand suffered $27.21m insurance losses from an extreme weather event in mid-August, the Insurance Council of New Zealand (ICNZ) said.

Initial data from the ICNZ revealed that general insurance claims reached 3,165. Of this, the Nelson Tasman District accounted for 1,248 private insurer claims with a provisional value of $12.27m and the rest of Aotearoa New Zealand (including Marlborough), 1,917 claims valued at $14.94m.

According to ICNZ Chief Executive, Tim Grafton said the final claims data would still be even higher.

The ICNZ also finalised the claims data from the mid-June floods which totaled 3,552 claims worth $11.53m

All of the data released today brings the running total for general insurance losses for extreme weather events in 2022 to $168.92m. The 2021 full year total was $183.65m.
