Australia warns of spike in theft claims amidst holiday season

Half of Aussies said they planned for 4-day vacations, leaving homes vulnerable.

NRMA Insurance reported a significant increase in home theft claims during the summer holiday season, with a 40% rise in claims compared to the rest of the year.

Between December 2023 and November this year, the insurer received 2,500 home theft claims, with January 2024 accounting for 10% of these cases, making it the peak month for such incidents.

A survey conducted by NRMA Insurance amongst 3,500 Australians revealed that nearly half (46%) plan to travel for four or more consecutive days during the summer, leaving homes more vulnerable to break-ins.

Despite the heightened risk, the survey showed that only 46% of travellers plan to have someone monitor their property, and just 13% intend to pause mail and deliveries—common indicators of unoccupied homes.

The insurer highlighted common theft targets, including bicycles, small electronic devices, and outdoor valuables such as power tools and copper piping, often accessible from backyards or side areas.

NRMA Insurance executive general manager of Retail Claims, Luke Gallagher, pointed out that 12% of Australians have experienced a home burglary and stressed the need for proactive measures during the holiday season.

He advised steps such as securing outdoor items, using safes for valuables, and employing security measures like sensor lights and cameras to reduce the likelihood of break-ins.
