Japan’s insurers disbursed $730m on disasters including Noto quake

Ishikawa Prefecture recorded the highest payouts.

Japan’s insurance claims paid for the 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake, and typhoons, windstorms, floods summed to $0.73b (¥104.8b) last year, data from the General Insurance Association of Japan showed.

The quake, which struck on 1 January, led to 179,245 total accepted insurance claims. Of the total, 126,698 were paid.

Ishikawa Prefecture recorded the highest payouts at $0.40b (¥57.6b) from 59,948 claims. Toyama followed with $0.17b (¥23.6b), and Niigata with $0.13b (¥17.9b).

Fukui and other areas accounted for a combined $0.04b (¥5.6b).

In addition to earthquake-related claims, insurers disbursed $0.95b (¥136b) in connection with hail damage that hit Hyogo Prefecture and surrounding areas on 16 April, 2024.

This included $0.59b (¥83.52b) for vehicle damage, $0.36b (¥51.90b) for fire insurance claims, and $0.0038b (¥539m) under miscellaneous casualty policies, from a total of 149,612 claims.

Typhoon No. 10 (Shanshan), which affected Japan from August 28 to September 1, 2024, generated 77,469 claims totaling $0.38b (¥54.91b).

This included $0.036b (¥5.17b) for vehicle damage, $0.33b (¥47.13b) for fire insurance, and $0.018b (¥2.61b) in other casualty-related payouts.
