China maintains 95% medical insurance coverage from 2021-2025
In 2024 alone, the number of reimbursed visits was 1.6 times higher than in 2020.
China’s basic medical insurance system maintained a coverage rate of around 95% during the 2021 to 2025 period, with over 1.32 billion people enrolled in 2024, according to the National Healthcare Security Administration.
Zhang Ke, head of the administration, reported that nearly 20 billion medical visits were reimbursed through the insurance programme from 2021 to 2024.
In 2024 alone, the number of reimbursed visits was 1.6 times higher than in 2020.
Medical assistance schemes have supported around 80 million people annually, helping ensure continued participation in the insurance system.
Li Tao, deputy head of the administration, said that from 2021 to 2025, authorities spent approximately $10.1b to subsidise disadvantaged groups, providing support in 350 million instances of insurance coverage.
As a result of this support, more than 99% of low-income individuals and those lifted out of poverty in rural areas are now covered by China’s medical insurance system.
