AIA recruits independent non-executive director

She has various experiences in the financial sector.

AIA Group Limited's Board of Directors is delighted to announce the appointment of  Nor Shamsiah Binti Mohd Yunus, also known as “Nor Shamsiah Mohd Yunus”, as an Independent Non-executive Director and a member of the Nomination Committee, effective from 21 September.

Edmund Tse, Chairman of AIA Group, expressed his enthusiasm at  Mohd Yunus joining the Board, citing her career in Malaysia and support for international organisations. He emphasised her substantial expertise in guiding financial industry growth and governance, which will provide valuable insights as AIA expands across its diverse markets.

Mohd Yunus, aged 59, currently holds the position of Chancellor at INCEIF (International Centre for Education in Islamic Finance) University in Malaysia. 

She boasts a 34-year tenure at Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM), where she assumed various roles. Notably, she served as Deputy Governor from November 2010 to June 2016 and as Governor from July 2018 to June 2023.

She also held key positions such as Chairperson of BNM’s Board of Directors, head of the Monetary Policy Committee, leader of the Financial Stability Executive Committee, head of the Reserve Management Committee, head of the Risk Management Committee, and head of the Digital Technology Committee.

During her tenure, Mohd Yunus represented BNM as an ex-officio Director of Perbadanan Insurans Deposit Malaysia (Malaysian Deposit Insurance Corporation), served as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the South East Asian Central Banks (SEACEN) Research and Training Centre, and worked as a non-executive member of the Audit Oversight Board of Malaysia. 

Her international experience includes serving as the Assistant Director of the Monetary and Capital Markets Department of the International Monetary Fund from April 2017 to June 2018.  Mohd Yunus's extensive background encompasses the regulation and supervision of banks and insurance companies, financial sector development, enforcement, and various other critical areas.
