Australians average two hospital insurance claims a year
21% rated hospital cover as their most essential form of insurance.
Australians with private hospital insurance are making active use of their coverage, with policyholders averaging two claims per year, according to new data from Money.com.au.
The report shows that 51% of hospital cover policyholders make one to two claims annually.
A further 10% file between three and five claims each year, whilst 7% submit six or more.
Despite this, 31% of respondents said they have never claimed on their hospital insurance.
Elective surgeries and overnight hospital stays are the most commonly claimed services.
Amongst respondents, 21% rated hospital cover as their most essential form of insurance, with 19% citing cost savings as the main reason.
Usage patterns vary across age groups. Baby Boomers are the most frequent users, with 68% claiming one to two times a year and only 20% having never made a claim.
In contrast, 40% of Gen X, 36% of Millennials, and 30% of Gen Z have never used their hospital cover.
The data suggests that older Australians are more likely to hold hospital cover for ongoing healthcare needs, whilst younger policyholders may retain coverage primarily for tax incentives or peace of mind.
The findings are based on a nationally representative survey of over 1,000 Australians conducted in March 2025.
