Cigna expands China hospital cover as Hong Kong costs rise
Residents made more overseas trips in 2025 as medical needs shifted.
Cigna Healthcare Hong Kong has adjusted its Cigna VHIS Series – Flexi Plan (Superior) in response to rising local medical costs and an increase in cross-border travel by residents.
The changes follow the Hospital Authority's implementation of revised public healthcare fees on 1 January 2026, which has increased out-of-pocket medical expenses for individuals.
Additionally, data from the Census and Statistics Department shows Hong Kong residents made over 117 million outbound trips in 2025, leading to higher numbers of consumers seeking medical treatment outside Hong Kong, particularly in Mainland China.
The updated policy extends its Mainland China medical coverage to encompass all Tier 3 hospitals.
It also alters the accommodation policy for treatments outside Hong Kong, Macau, and the US, upgrading the allowance to a private room level.
