GIA warns public on scam calls impersonating insurance reps
Scammers are using local mobile numbers beginning with “+65” or “8”.
The General Insurance Association of Singapore (GIA) has issued a public alert regarding a wave of fraudulent phone calls from individuals falsely claiming to be GIA staff or representatives.
These scam calls are not from GIA, and members of the public are advised to remain vigilant.
According to reports received by the association, scammers are contacting individuals using local mobile numbers beginning with “+65” or “8”.
The callers typically claim to represent GIA and may refer to motor accident reports or insurance transactions, sometimes mentioning the recipient’s name and personal details to appear credible.
These calls may attempt to solicit personal information, offer fraudulent services or products, or request payments.
GIA emphasises that it does not make unsolicited calls to the public, request sensitive information, or ask for payments over the phone.
The public is advised not to disclose personal or financial details, transfer money, or share device screens with unknown callers. If such calls are received, they should be treated as scams.
To safeguard against these scams, GIA encourages the public to add the ScamShield app to block scam calls and filter messages.
Set appropriate transaction limits and activate the Money Lock feature with your bank.
Also, check for signs of scams using official sources such as the ScamShield app or the 24/7 ScamShield Helpline at 1799.
Lastly, immediately tell the authorities, family, and friends if you encounter a scam. Victims should contact their bank immediately to block unauthorised transactions and file a police report.
