At least one major Indian insurer has agreed to provide cover.
The Indian Academy of Pediatric Surgeons (IAPS) is pushing to have unborn children insured for birth defects and surgical problems during infancy according to a report by The Times of India.
IAPS president, Dr. Ravindra Ramadwar, said that they have been deliberating with insurance firms before having a breakthrough to one major insurer, Star Health and Allied Insurance company. Ramadwar said they are in continuous talks with other insurers.
In India, around 1.7 million children are born with birth defects.
