ICA appoints Suncorp CEO as new chair

He succeeds Nick Hawkins, who has held the role for two years.

The Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) has appointed Steve Johnston, chief executive officer and managing director of Suncorp, as the new chair of its board.

Johnston, who has been a director on the ICA Board since August 2021, will begin his term on 1 January 2025.

Johnston succeeds Nick Hawkins, managing director and CEO of IAG, who has held the role for two years. The board recently renamed the position from President to Chair in line with current practices.

Hawkins highlighted the challenges faced by the insurance sector during his term, including the costliest floods in Australia's history. 

Johnston acknowledged Hawkins' contributions and stated his focus will be on strengthening partnerships with governments, communities, and regulators to address sector challenges and improve sustainability for customers.
