ICA reports 95,000 claims from Cyclone Alfred damage
The cyclone and floods have exceeded A$1.2b in insurance losses.
Insurance losses from ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred and the North Queensland floods in February have exceeded $720m (A$1.2b), according to new data released by the Insurance Council of Australia (ICA).
Insurers have received more than 95,000 claims related to damage from ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred, with losses nearing $600m (A$1b).
About 30% of these claims have been settled, largely involving food spoilage and temporary accommodation.
In addition, over 10,000 claims have been lodged from the North Queensland floods, totalling $140.2m (A$233m).
These are primarily related to food spoilage and water ingress caused by wind-driven rain, overflowing gutters, and flooding.
ICA CEO Andrew Hall said 2025 has started with significant weather activity, especially in Queensland.
Whilst only a small number of claims have been made so far for the most recent western Queensland floods, insurers are supporting affected customers and preparing to deploy additional resources once access is restored.
