India health claims surge 240% to $152.7m

Average claim per person reached $2,125.

Health insurance claims in India skyrocketed 240% to $152.7m in one month until the last week of July, data from the country’s General Insurance Council showed.

Almost 71,500 claims were made until end-July, significantly higher than the 20,965 made until 22 June.

The average claim per person reached $2,125 (INR160,000).

However, claims received have only amounted to 4.08% of the total number of people in the country infected with COVID-19.

In terms of life insurance, the Life Insurance Council registered 561 COVID-related death claims amounting $3.75m until end-July.
