Insurance demand amongst Indians surges as weddings shift overseas
60% of insured travellers are parents and seniors boosting medical protection uptake.
Insurance purchases linked to destination weddings grew by 27.4% between 2023 and 2024, with the same growth rate maintained into 2025, according to Policybazaar data.
This growth reflects a shift toward international weddings becoming a mainstream choice, as well as a higher awareness of the financial risks involved in multi-day, high-cost travel.
These travel insurance buying patterns now closely follow the Indian wedding calendar rather than standard holiday seasons.
The most significant increase in activity occurs during the winter wedding window from November to mid-December.
Whilst Thailand remains the most popular destination due to visa ease and wedding infrastructure, other locations like the UAE, Vietnam, and Sri Lanka are also seeing high demand.
For high-spend groups, European destinations such as Italy, Spain, and Greece remain top choices.
The report shows that wedding travel is a family-wide event involving multiple generations.
Whilst the couples themselves represent 40% of the insured, parents and senior travelers make up the remaining 60%.
Because of this age mix, there is a strong preference for medical emergency and pre-existing disease coverage.
However, the most requested protection is for baggage loss at 28%, which covers high-value wedding outfits and jewellery. Most travellers are opting for a high sum insured of $250,000, regardless of whether they are travelling to Southeast Asia or Europe.
Whilst demand is still concentrated in major cities like Mumbai and Bengaluru, there is increasing participation from Tier-2 cities such as Jaipur and Ludhiana.
Policybazaar notes that families now treat travel insurance as an essential part of the wedding planning process to protect their significant emotional and financial investments.
