Labuan Re cuts processing time and boosts system performance

The new platform cut batch job processing times by up to 80%. 

Labuan Re has completed an upgrade of its core infrastructure, reporting faster processing speeds, lower energy use, and improved reliability after moving its production systems to HPE servers powered by AMD EPYC CPUs.

The reinsurer shifted its infrastructure from its on-premises facility in Kuala Lumpur to a green data centre in Cyberjaya as part of its ESG roadmap.

The relocation gave the company an opportunity to reassess its long-standing Intel-based environment. 

After reviewing benchmark tests and conducting internal assessments, Labuan Re selected 4th Gen AMD EPYC 9124 processors for its production, testing, and disaster recovery workloads.

According to CIO Patrick Wong, the new platform cut batch job processing times by up to 80%. 

A job that previously took up to eight hours now completes in under two, whilst underwriting dashboard processing fell from six hours to one. 

Profitability calculations dropped from seven hours to one, and several ageing and analysis reports saw processing times reduced from between six and fifteen hours to roughly one hour.

The upgrade also reduced the reinsurer’s physical footprint. By consolidating its environment, Labuan Re now uses two data centre racks instead of three, lowering rental costs by about 30%. 

The move to all-Flash storage further reduced power consumption.

Labuan Re is sizing its upgraded infrastructure for the next five years as it prepares to introduce AI tools to support its underwriting team. 

The company is also piloting a system designed to shorten risk assessment turnaround times from two to three weeks to less than a day.
