Markel announces acquisition of marine insurance specialist MECO Group
Markel plans to leverage MECO’s presence in APAC.
Markel said it plans to acquire The MECO Group Limited (MECO), a specialist marine managing general agent with offices in London, Dubai, and Shanghai.
It provides marine insurance products and services to a global client base, including charterers, traders, shipowners, and companies involved in maritime operations and supply chains.
MECO reported $63m in gross written premiums in 2024.
MECO operates through three insurance brands — The Charterers P&I Club, Transmarine, and Aurora P&I — and offers complementary legal services through its affiliated law firm, True North.
Its underwriting expertise covers marine classes that complement Markel’s existing portfolio, including charterers protection and indemnity (P&I), freight, defence and demurrage, trade disruption, loss of hire, strikes delay, small vessel owners' P&I, contractual extension liabilities, and related marine insurance products.
Following the acquisition, MECO will integrate into Markel but continue operating under its existing brands.
Markel plans to leverage MECO’s products, services, and client relationships, particularly in the Asia-Pacific and European markets.
