Markel names new CEO of its primary underwriting businesses

He brings over 20 years of experience in specialty insurance.

Markel Group has appointed Simon Wilson as Chief Executive Officer of its primary underwriting businesses—Markel Specialty, Markel International, and Markel Global Reinsurance—now collectively referred to as Markel Insurance.

Wilson, currently President of Markel International, steps into the role as part of the company’s efforts to streamline operations and enhance customer focus.

Wilson brings over 20 years of experience in specialty insurance.

Since joining Markel in 2010, he has led the company’s international expansion beyond London, helping grow operations in Europe, Canada, and Asia to $2.5b in annual gross written premium.

Under his leadership as President of Markel International since 2021, gross written premiums increased nearly 40%, and net underwriting profit rose by more than 250%, the company said in a press release.
