Why 9 in 10 Japanese want to purchase travel insurance this year
More than half will access travel insurance through credit card benefits.
Nearly 90% of Japanese travellers planning trips in 2025 intend to purchase travel insurance, according to the inaugural Allianz Partners Travel Index.
The data highlights strong insurance uptake amongst outbound travellers, with safety and financial protection being key drivers amid rising travel costs and economic uncertainty.
Amongst those planning to travel, more than half will access travel insurance through credit card benefits or by purchasing directly from travel websites.
Higher-budget travellers are more likely to choose the latter, showing a preference for tailored or premium policies.
The Allianz survey of 1,000 Japanese adults also found that whilst 62% of respondents do not plan to travel this year, largely due to financial constraints, those who are travelling are doing so with careful preparation.
Insurance is emerging as a central part of their planning, particularly in mitigating risks such as trip cancellations, medical emergencies, and lost baggage.
Generational differences were also evident, with older travellers (aged 50 and above) showing heightened concern over travel risks, such as theft and accidents.
This group is more likely to take additional precautions, including comprehensive travel insurance, to ensure a smoother experience abroad.
