GIAJ names new chairman, introduces priorities for coming year

His key policies and initiatives involve digitalisation, climate change, and sector awareness.

Keisuke Niiro assumed the position of Chairman of the General Insurance Association of Japan (GIAJ) last 30 June.

In a press statement, his primary objectives and key policies for the upcoming year begin with raising awareness for natural disaster response; raising awareness among those who need more risk information and; contributing to the development of general insurance business in Asian countries/regions.

Further, Niiro has set out initiatives for Japan’s general insurance environment which he targets to pursue in his term.

Niiro hopes to digitise claim payments for earthquake insurance amidst fears of the Tokyo metropolitan area inland earthquake or Nankai Trough earthquake.

Initiatives on climate change aim to commence study sessions and invite financial experts to gain their expectations in the industry.

Further, Niiro hopes to respond to technological innovations in vehicles and address “malicious road service providers”.

“In addition to reinforcing discipline within the industry and with related parties, including efforts to pursue compliance and eliminate fraudulent insurance claims, member companies will engage in business activities close to customers and agents.” Niiro said.
