Australian group advocates for strict regulation on genetic test use

The Council of Australian Life Insurers calls for gov’t regulation.

The Council of Australian Life Insurers (CALI) supports a ban on using genetic test results in insurance underwriting to empower Australians in managing their health.

CALI CEO Christine Cupitt emphasises the need for government regulation to ensure that individuals aren't discouraged from taking genetic tests proactively.

CALI's 19 members acknowledge the role of genetic testing in providing peace of mind and reducing health risks.

The life insurance industry, as stated in CALI’s submission to the Treasury inquiry, backs strict regulation with limited government-approved exclusions to ensure fairness for insured Australians.

CALI emphasises that life insurers never require genetic testing for underwriting purposes, aiming to support individuals in managing their health preventatively.

The Life Insurance Code of Practice reinforces these principles, and once individuals obtain life insurance, future genetic tests don't impact coverage or premiums.

CALI reassures that around 15 million Australians are protected by life insurance, and the majority obtained coverage without disclosing genetic test results.

Access to affordable life insurance coverage is available through superannuation without worrying about genetic test disclosure.

Disclosing genetic test results typically works in favour of the individual, with over 80% showing no impact on underwriting decisions and 14% having a positive impact.
