Shriram General wins ₹28.6m claim case with fraud ruling in Rajasthan

The case involved a Toyota Fortuner insured by SGIC.

Shriram General Insurance Company (SGIC) has successfully defended a ~$$342,515 (₹28.6m) motor insurance claim after the Rajasthan State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (SCDRC) dismissed the complaint for fraud and non-disclosure.

The case involved a Toyota Fortuner insured by SGIC and owned by Mukesh Kumar, who filed a total loss claim after an accident in August 2017.

Investigations revealed the vehicle had already been declared a total loss in 2016 under a previous owner.

Kumar had purchased it as salvage but failed to disclose this when insuring it, violating disclosure rules.

Independent and company surveyors confirmed the damage was exaggerated and inconsistent with the accident history.

The Commission ruled that Kumar had suppressed facts and fabricated evidence, justifying SGIC’s rejection of the claim.

The complaint was dismissed in full with no compensation awarded. SGIC was represented by Counsel Vizzy Agarwal.
