China covers 1.07 billion people with basic old-age insurance in 2024
China’s population aged 60 and above reached 310.3 million last year.
By the end of 2024, over 1.07 billion people were covered by China’s basic old-age insurance, an increase of 6.39 million from the previous year, according to a report from the Ministry of Civil Affairs and the Office of the China National Committee on Ageing.
Coverage for urban and enterprise employees also rose during the year.
China’s population aged 60 and above reached 310.3 million in 2024, accounting for 22% of the total, whilst those aged 65 and older numbered 220.2 million, or 15.6%.
Average life expectancy stood at 79 years.
Elderly care capacity has expanded, with 406,000 institutions and facilities nationwide providing more than 7.99 million nursing beds at the end of 2024.
