Globally insured losses highest since 2011

But the total global economic losses stood at $151b, lowest since H1 2021.

Global insured losses from natural catastrophes reached $84b in the first half of 2025 (H1 2025), the highest mid-year total since 2011, according to a report by Gallagher Re

The figure is significantly above the 10-year H1 average of $54b, driven mostly by events in the United States.

Two major events contributed 87% of the global total: January wildfires in the US at $40b and severe convective storms (SCS) at $32b.

In total, there were 14 insured loss events exceeding $1b, 13 of which occurred in the US and one in the Asia-Pacific region—the lowest number of global billion-dollar H1 events since 2019.

Despite the elevated insured losses, total global economic losses stood at $151b, the lowest H1 figure since 2021, though still above the 2015–2024 average.

Looking ahead, attention is shifting to the Atlantic hurricane season as the region enters its peak period.

With ENSO-neutral conditions in place, Colorado State University, in partnership with Gallagher Re, forecasts near-average hurricane activity.

The report also revisits the 20th anniversary of the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season, highlighting Hurricane Katrina's impact and drawing parallels to current climatic conditions.
