NRMA Insurance tallies more claims in 2025 than all of 2024
69% of Australians are now more aware and concerned about extreme weather risks.
NRMA Insurance has received over 32,000 claims for wild weather-related damage between January and May 2025, exceeding the total number recorded in all of 2024.
According to the latest NRMA Insurance Wild Weather Tracker, a quarter of Australians were affected by extreme weather this year. Cyclones, floods, storms, damaging winds, and a dust storm in South Australia contributed to the spike in claims.
In autumn alone, 15,840 claims were lodged, largely due to Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred, which impacted around 4 million people across South East Queensland and northern New South Wales.
More than half of surveyed residents in these areas said it was their first experience with a cyclone.
NRMA Insurance noted that 69% of Australians are now more aware and concerned about extreme weather risks, whilst only 36% said they have taken steps to better protect their homes.
Executive general manager of Claims Luke Gallagher said 2025 has so far brought three floods, two extreme hailstorms, and ongoing drought in southern regions.
Gallagher also noted the growing exposure of the population to these risks. South East Queensland’s population is projected to grow by 2 million by 2046, placing more people and properties at risk.
Meteorologist Kathryn Turner added that this winter is expected to be warmer and wetter than usual, driven by rising sea surface temperatures.
She urged households to prepare by checking drainage systems, securing roofs and windows, and creating emergency plans.
