But a third expressed cost concerns, and a fifth felt it was not beneficial for their trip.
Nine in 10 Indians are aware of travel insurance, yet detailed understanding and ownership intent still lag, according to an ICICI Lombard General Insurance report.
The WanderSafe Report 2025 further revealed that of those travellers with minimal interest in travel coverage, nearly half cited a lack of awareness.
Also, a third expressed cost concerns and a fifth felt it was not beneficial for their trip.
Although after the COVID-19 pandemic, six in 10 travellers actively search for travel insurance. This was higher than the 54% before the pandemic years, signalling growing recognition of the importance of protection.
“Travellers associate insurance with key protections: accidental death, hospitalisation, flight cancellations, baggage loss, and coverage for adventure activities,” the report stated.
The report also showed that top claims include medical expenses, trip cancellations, delays, baggage loss, and loss of travel documents, with common claim rejections due to policy exclusions, deductibles, or unmet conditions.
Other findings from the report also showed consumer preference, where Gen Z, Millennials, and Gen X travellers (63% male, 37% female) indicate a strong overall preference for Asian destinations, supported by convenient visa processes and improved connectivity.
There was also a clear generational difference, with younger travellers—particularly Gen Z and Millennials—showing greater interest in long-haul destinations such as Australia and Europe/UK compared to Gen X.
