Why do Australians rank health insurance highest on financial value?

One-fifth believe extras cover offers the best return on investment.

Australians see health insurance as delivering the most financial value compared to other types of insurance, according to a new survey by Money.com.au

The research, conducted in March 2025 with 1,000 respondents, found that 20% believe extras cover offers the best return on investment, whilst 19% ranked hospital insurance highest.

Money.com.au’s general manager of Health Insurance, Chris Whitelaw, said the findings reflect how Australians increasingly favour policies that deliver everyday benefits.

Extras policyholders make around five claims per year on average—typically for dental, optical, or physiotherapy services—compared to two annual claims for hospital cover.

Meanwhile, only 10% of respondents said car insurance or life/income protection saved them the most money, and just 7% said the same for travel insurance.

Home and contents insurance ranked lowest, with only 4% reporting it had saved them the most.

Despite this, home and contents insurance was named by 88% of respondents as offering the most peace of mind, followed by life insurance (80%) and travel insurance (79%).
