Australia records surge in claims, cyclone recovery drags
To expedite the claims process, insurers have deployed additional claims consultants.
The Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) reported that insurers have received more than 44,000 claims as of 13 March following ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred.
Whilst initial concerns about widespread severe wind damage were not realised, many claims have been filed for storm-driven water damage and food spoilage caused by power outages.
To expedite the claims process, insurers have deployed additional claims consultants and engaged interstate builders. The ICA has
cautioned residents about "disaster chasers" operating in impacted areas. These individuals may offer services such as tree and debris removal, requesting cash upfront but often leaving work incomplete or poorly done.
Homeowners are urged to verify with their insurer before agreeing to any work, as insurers will only cover approved services.
Andrew Hall, CEO of the ICA, said that whilst the damage from ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred was less severe than predicted, many communities still face a lengthy recovery.
